The Nigerian entertainment community is still mourning the loss of the iconic Nollywood figure, John Okafor, famously known as Mr Ibu. After his passing on March 2, 2024, in a Nigerian hospital, plans have been finalized for his burial, set to take place on June 28, 2024—nearly four months post his demise.
Reason Behind the Delay in Burial Unveiled
According to sources from Daily Post Nigeria, Mr Ibu’s elder brother, Sunday Okafor, disclosed the rationale behind the delayed burial. The decision was made to orchestrate a grand farewell befitting of the beloved actor’s stature.
Burial Arrangements: A Tribute to a Legend
The Okafor family, in conjunction with the burial organizing committee, has meticulously planned a sequence of events to honour Mr Ibu’s legacy.

Commencing the Tribute: Events Schedule
A joint statement issued by the family and the burial committee reveals that the burial proceedings will unfold in Amuri, Mr Ibu’s hometown, situated in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
“We cordially invite you to join us on June 28, 2024, as we bid farewell to our beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and in-law. Your presence will be a cherished part of our final moments with our icon,” the statement iterates.

A Five-Day Tribute: Commemorating Mr Ibu’s Life
The tribute extends over five days, commencing on Tuesday, June 25, with a notable novelty match dedicated to honoring Mr Ibu’s memory. Subsequent to this, on Wednesday, June 26, “Mr Ibu’s Night” will feature a candlelit procession accompanied by live entertainment.
The itinerary also includes a Christian Wake-Keep on June 27 at Mr Ibu’s residence in Eziokwe Amuri, Nkanu West. The funeral service will then be conducted on June 28, marking the culmination of the five-day commemoration.
The concluding event on Sunday, June 30, will witness a Church Thanksgiving, where relatives, acquaintances, and well-wishers will convene to express their gratitude.
