Zahara passed away on 11 December last year after spending almost three weeks at a private hospital in Johannesburg. She was buried in her home province, Eastern Cape, on 23 December.

In 2022, the Afropop singing sensation was on the verge of losing her townhouse as a result of defaulting on her monthly installments of R17 665, 40. Nedbank, which had given her a R1.9 million loan, was set to auction off her home to the highest bidder.

Following the unfortunate passing of Zahara, it was revealed by Sunday World that the generous donor who came to her aid was the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) under the leadership of Julius Malema. Confirming this assistance, EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo disclosed that their political party had contributed R100,000 towards helping the acclaimed singer with her financial struggles.

Despite the EFF’s support, it became evident that Zahara’s financial difficulties were far from over, as her house was eventually auctioned off before her demise. Zahara’s sisters, Lumka Mkutukana and Bandezwa Mkutukana-Febana, shared that Marten Bekker was the buyer of the property.
