Legal Battles
Prior to his death, Makwarela faced legal challenges, notably appearing in the Pretoria Commercial Crime Court regarding fraud charges related to his insolvency status. Despite his efforts to dismiss the case, he was unsuccessful.
Makwarela’s tenure as mayor was marked by controversy, as it was revealed that he had been declared insolvent in 2016, rendering him ineligible for public office. He attempted to refute these claims with a falsified rehabilitation certificate, which was debunked by the court.
