According to Xaluva, around 16 of the show’s actors went on an illegal strike for a week, demanding better pay, extended contracts and royalties from the show’s rebroadcasts.

However, after being ignored and rejected, they decided to take matters into their own hands. Xaluva explained, “People were really angry and fed up. We thought having an unprotected strike would send a message that we were serious about our grievances.” Unfortunately, the soap opera’s producers chose to fire the cast for going on strike rather than meet their demands.

Xaluva laments that, “I think by firing us they thought we would stop or that other people wouldn’t follow our example, but I think it only made us more angry and fed up.” This was indeed the case, as the dispute between the generations actors and the show’s producers led to a 19-month strike coordinated by the Media, Entertainment, and Arts Alliance (MEAA).

During this strike, the actors had to survive by taking on odd jobs and other acting projects as they continued to fight for better industry conditions. Although the show eventually changed its cast of characters, Xaluva has fond memories of his time on Generations and “all the people who worked together” to make it work.

He’s proud of the legacy of the main cast members and their sacrifice to push for better industry conditions, and still hopes for a future where actors are “able to make a living wage from their craft without being exploited.”

Following the mass action, the production company MMSV Productions said it had “terminated the contracts of the striking actors”.

The actors got deadlines to return for production, which they defied, and SABC ordered the production company to terminate their contracts.

Xaluva appeared on an episode of Podcast And Chill, which aired on 1 September, giving an insider perspective of what happened.

He said: On the Generations contract, there was a clause that said 14% of whatever income is generated by the show has to be shared among the lead actors. So we realised that that clause had been there for a long time and we had never received that money. So we started having those conversations.

Secondly, this is a show that’s making R500 million a year. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be earning in a high-end income bracket, especially with the fact that at the time when you were on the show, you couldn’t be on another show.

Life after Generations | Drum

So you’re limiting me in terms of what I can do outside of this space, and yet you’re not giving me the money I’m worth. SO promises were made, and we went on the first strike, and they promised some things.

So what happened is that they kept shifting goalposts. Sooner or later, it was like one year down the line, and the five things you promised haven’t happened. That was when we were like; we’re going to amplify this thing—Ziyakhala ke manje.

Although the reasons why Generations: The Legacy actors Zolisa Xaluva (“Jason”) and Vusi Kunene (“Jack Mabaso”) were fired are unknown, their departures marked a massive change in the long-running soap. Xaluva’s “Jason” in particular was a beloved character whose departure still has many fans emotionally invested in the show feeling bitter and demoralized. It is clear that Generations: The Legacy has been significantly altered and time will tell if it will ever recover.
