Just after midnight, a hail of gunfire claimed the lives of well-known musician DJ Sumbody and another person he was traveling with.
The Ayep Yep and Monate Mpolaye performer “ran into an unfortunate situation that resulted to his passing,” according to a statement from Sumsounds Music.
On Sunday, the DJ was scheduled to play at the Veuve Clicquot All White Picnic.
A third individual, who was riding in a BMW X5, was shot and taken to the hospital.
Lt-Col Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Police, told Sowetan on Sunday that the shooting happened just after midnight in Sandton, Johannesburg, at the intersection of Woodmead Drive and Woodland Drive.
“When police arrived on the site, they discovered two victims of gunshot wounds inside a VW Golf. A driver and a passenger were both pronounced deceased at the site. The third victim, who was driving a BMW X5, reportedly had gunshot wounds and was evacuated to the closest medical facility, Masondo said.
